Solar cell technology specialist, Solar3D, has revealed details of its proposal to develop an innovative solar cell. The company’s groundbreaking solar cell technology is inspired by light management methods utilized in fiber-optic equipment.
Solar3D’s solar cell technology uses a three-dimensional design to capture sunlight within micro- photovoltaic structures in which photons agitate around until they are modified into electrons. Solar3D officials expect that the innovative solar cell technique would radically revive the economics of solar power market.
The Chief Executive Officer at Solar3D, Jim Nelson, said that the company plans to introduce a functioning prototype by 2011 end and important milestones have been devised to support the development team. The milestones include the design of solar cell’s light-trapping element, estimation of the element’s expected efficiency, the design of the cell’s 3-D micro-photovoltaic structure and production of the prototype.
Nelson continued that the company is re-engineering the solar cell completely to create a future generation product that is more effective than current technologies. He further said that the company is developing a design that will be used with current production methods, resulting in reduced expenditure per watt of solar photovoltaics.
Affordable solar power can be produced by integrating micro-photovoltaics with production engineering and improved light management technology into an innovative 3-D solar cell, he concluded.
