Bing Energy, a company that produces parts for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells, declared that it has entered into a commercialization accord with Florida State University for sole use of an innovative nanotechnology developed by the University.
The new technology will allow Bing Energy to produce a new type of small sized, light weight and robust type of hydrogen fuel cells cost-effectively. The new technology is formulated by Dr. Jim P. Zheng, who works as a professor in the electrical and computer engineering department at the Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering.
The exclusive technology is designed to lessen the use of costly platinum constituents in the hydrogen fuel cells. Dr. Zheng utilized buckypaper, a carbon structure that is light in weight and carries electricity or heat easily and has formulated a thin material or membrane that will lessen the quantity of platinum used in fuel cells. The thinner and light weight membrane utilized in the construction makes the fuel cell smaller with the capability to generate the same quantity of power.
The nanotechnology utilized in the process of producing the fuel cell improves the performance of the fuel cell by 40%, its durability by 25% and yet makes it possible to manufacture the cell at a lower cost.
