HRM plans to apply for federal funding and grant program for its solar hot water program.
The interest shown by the residents of Halifax in the proposed solar program has made HRM officials to proceed further in the project, including the applications for federal funding. Though 2,000 residents applied for installation of the solar panels, only half of them cleared the city’s screening process.
Halifax homeowner’s property taxes are to be used for financing the installation of solar panels. The federal rebates for the program have been offered to be handled by HRM.
Many Halifax residents expressed their interest to pay for the solar panels, which was about $5,000. But they wanted HRM to take care of the paperwork regarding the quality insurance, rebates and contracting. This has made Halifax officials change the program to make 300 homes as self-financing and 700 under the tax bill scheme.
