Government sources in Nova Scotia have revealed that Atlantis Resources, a UK- based firm, has been allotted a fourth berth in the Bay of Fundy for the testing of a tidal turbine.
Atlantis has taken on Irving Shipbuilding and Lockheed Martin as partners for the designing, construction, deployment and monitoring of the AK 1000 Mark II turbine, which is considered to be one of the largest tidal turbines in the world. The deployment of the turbine would cost an amount ranging between $10 million to $15 million.
According to Atlantis, the AK Series Turbines are horizontal axis turbines built on a commercial scale, and are designed for deploying in the open ocean with its harsh environments. They were accessible in systems of 1MW and 2 MW. The three partners were one among the five bidders who had applied for the Bay of Fundy berth. There are three more birth holders, Minas Basin Pulp and Power, Clean Current based in B.C. and Nova Scotia Power and Open Hydro, an Ireland- based company.
Atlantis is a company actively involved in commercializing tidal power technology globally. It provides project origination, efficient and highly reliable marine turbines, project installation, resource assessment and maintenance services to utilities all over the world.
