Turkey Hill Dairy to Receive Power from Frey Farm Wind Turbine Project

Turkey Hill Dairy will get a quarter of its annual electricity from the new wind turbine power project from the neighboring Frey Farm on Turkey Hill.

The Frey Farm Wind Turbine project comprises two wind turbines, which would produce approximately 25% of Turkey Hill Dairy's annual electricity requirements, partnering with Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA). This power is adequate to manufacture six million gallons of ice cream and 15 million gallons of iced tea every year.

The wind turbines were online and generated power in February 2011. They produced 769,677 kilowatt hours of electricity, which supplies 32% of electricity needs of the dairy per month.

The company has used the new wind power and decreased the carbon footprint. One of the sustainability programs of the dairy is carrying out a wind turbine venture project introduced in 2003. This Program incorporates waste recycling and reduction, reducing fuel usage by decreasing transportation loads and distances, packaging material cuts, and steam power usage, supplying a minimum of 75% of the dairy's hot water needs.

Turkey Hill Dairy will buy all the power produced by the twin General Electric wind turbines. These turbines were fixed on October 28, 2010 and officially commenced power generation on January 10, 2011.

The power generation from fossil fuels will add around 5,900 tons per year of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The annual reduction in greenhouse gas is equal to eliminating 1,000 cars from the road, decreasing consumption of gasoline by 600,000 gallons.
