Siemens Secures Third Contract Order to Supply 3 MW Direct Drive Wind Turbines

Siemens Energy declared that it has received one more order from Minnesota Power to supply 35 SWT-3.0-101 direct drive wind turbines, each with 3 MW capacity, for installation at the Bison 2 wind power production center close to North Dakota.

The 3 MW SWT-3.0-101 model direct drive wind turbine incorporates a rotor with a diameter of 101 m and a permanent magnet generator.

According to the provisions of the order, Siemens Energy will transport, install and commission the wind turbines. The delivery of the wind turbines will start from August 2012 and the installation and commissioning are scheduled to take place by the end of 2012. The direct drive wind turbines from the company will have fewer numbers of parts when compared to a traditional geared wind turbine. Reduced number of moving parts considerably improves the power production capability of the wind turbines and also reduces the level of maintenance.

When completed, the Bison 1 and 2 wind power generation farms will have a combined power potential to generate enough power to supply electricity to over 50,000 houses in Minnesota.
