Researchers Find No Disparity in CO2 Emissions Between Country Side and City

A study performed by the researchers Jukka Heinonen and Professor Seppo Junnila at Finland located Aalto University has dispelled the fact that people living in cities will leave a lesser carbon footprint than those who live in the country side and found that the carbon emissions remain the same in the country side and city areas.

It also proved that the amount of carbon dioxide discharges will always remain related to the quantity of goods and services consumed by the people and not by the place where they live.

For the purpose of study the researchers have utilized hybrid life cycle analysis (LCA) approach to calculate the carbon discharges by taking into account the details such as consumption details, monetary transactions involved and production. The present study includes all the impacts of the ingested services and their carbon footprint. The research also revealed that the release of carbon is directly related to the income of the people and their usage habits..

The researchers performed their study at Tampere region and Helsinki region in Finland and found housing contributes to most of the carbon dioxide releases in the form of energy used for cooling and heating purposes, and during construction and maintenance periods. It found an increased level of carbon footprint at country side due to increased level of transportation but established the impact as minimal.
