Ballast Nedam Inks Agreement for Butendiek Offshore Wind Farm in Germany

Ballast Nedam has inked an agreement with wpd for about € 250 million for installing 80 turbine foundations at the Butendiek marine wind farm located in Germany. The project is situated in the German Bight on the west side of the German island Sylt. The financial close of the Butendiek offshore wind farm is expected to be achieved towards the end of this year.

The Butendiek offshore wind farm comprises 80, 3.6 MW turbines, a total of 288 MW will be in waters of between 17 m and 22 m. The turbine foundation contains a transition piece and a monopile (steel tubular pile). The transition piece unites the monopile with the tower of the wind turbine. The design as well as the building activities of the turbine foundations will go on during 2012 and the installation is slated for 2013.

In order to install the turbine foundations, Ballast Nedam will employ its Heavy Lift Vessel (HLV) Svanen. At present, the HLV Svanen is being used at the London Array offshore wind farm located in the UK for fixing foundations. Recently, HLV Svanen completed 51 foundations for offshore wind turbines under the Walney 2 project in the Irish Sea. The HLV Svanen will install foundations at the Anholt offshore wind farm located in Denmark in 2012.
