ABB Begins Installing Quick-Charging Systems for Electric Vehicles in Netherlands

ABB, a power and automation technology group, declared that it has begun installing manifold quick-charging systems for electric vehicles (EVs) at a few of the BP service stations in the Netherlands as part of a countrywide testing.

ABB has installed two direct current (DC) Terra systems in Utrecht, which will be formally inaugurated on Nov. 30. ABB will install another charger at a BP service station in Rotterdam in December, with two more to ensue at places to be known early next year. BP has entered into an intention contract with The New Motion, by which New Motion will use BP’s chargers as part of a bigger network of DC charging stations across the Netherlands. A Dutch taxi operator having an electric-vehicle fleet of considerable size, Prestige GreenCab, has taken the initiative for the Utretcht installations..

EV battery recharge is possible by the Terra stations in 15 to 30 minutes against the eight hours of charging through a normal alternating current (AC) power outlet. Two kinds Terra chargers will be installed by ABB in order to address the specific capacity needs at the different BP locations. Two cars can be concurrently charged by the multi-port Terra Base Station 100.2 and is perfect for places that are likely to see a raise in the electric-vehicle traffic in the next few years. The Terra 51 has been developed especially for areas where there is regular traffic and is a single-port charger.

All ABB’s Terra systems have numerous connectivity features that aid service operators to operate their network more effectively, such as superior backbone network uptime, software updates and remote maintenance and are compliant with the open charge point protocol (OCPP) and other generally used back-office integration standards, facilitating real-time user validation and endorsement and numerous other functionalities that operators use to service their customers better. In The New Motion network, customers will be supplied with radio-frequency identification (RFID) cards to be used for validation at all chargers across the countrywide infrastructure.
