Cabot has released a new treated fumed silica for the bonding paste market.
This highly performing CAB-O-SIL ULTRABOND 4740 is used for bonding paste applications. It is mostly used in the manufacturing of windmill blades for the turbine generators.
Generally, two pieces are present in a windmill blade. The length and weight of today’s blades can be up to 80 m and 15 t, respectively. A bonding paste integrates these two pieces.
Increasing the length of a windmill blade is a major challenge in order to maximize the capacity of wind energy. The blades can offer high performance and more efficiency, only if they are stronger. A blade’s life can be expanded through a strong bonding paste, which enables the production of long blades using more sag-resistant composites.
The CAB-O-SIL ULTRABOND 4740 fumed silica provides 25% to 30% of higher sag resistance, when compared to present industry solutions. This enhanced performance has eliminated the requirement for bonding paste clients to over-design present solutions in order to reach stable sag resistance.
The content of fumed silica in the bonding paste formulation has been decreased in the new product by 10% to 15%. The latest product offers key benefits of simple applications and low viscosity over the blades.
The processing time for fumed silica in CAB-O-SIL ULTRABOND 4740 is decreased by up to 50% in the manufacturing phase, when compared to other competitive market products. This feature significantly decreases the total cycle time.
The CAB-O-SIL ULTRABOND 4740 was specially made for viscosity management and sag resistance of bonding pastes.
