Hertz, one of the world’s largest general use car rental companies operating from about 8,000 locations in around 150 countries worldwide, will trial Plugless Power, the first charging system developed for electric vehicles (EVs). The company has introduced EVs into its rental fleet in three continents, including Europe, Asia and North America.
The wireless charging system has been developed by Virginia-based Evatran to provide customers an easy method to charge their EVs. The system uses inductive power transfer making EV recharging more efficient without the need for plug and cord. Currently, Evatran works with auto makers to integrate Plugless Power mass-market EVs.
The testing will help the U.S. to grow as a leader in the EV market. Hertz will be followed by five companies from other industry segments. Participants of the Plugless Power’s pilot program will deliver feedback on daily usage, user interfaces and need for additional functionality.
It is the first car rental firm to implement EVs and plug-in hybrid electric (PHEVs) in China, UK and the U.S. The company is introducing several consumer groups to plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles. As a result of this, Hertz is establishing partnerships with corporations, non-governmental organizations, municipalities, charging-station providers such as GE, automakers and other stakeholders to make electric vehicles easily accessible to users.
