SunPower, a designer, manufacturer and distributor of high-efficient solar panels and systems, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport have dedicated a 5.4 MW SunPower high efficiency solar power system.
The project signifies Sky Harbor Airport’s commitment to conserve energy and enhance air quality in Arizona as well as save airport funds.
Sky Harbor Airport has signed a solar service contract with SunPower, which has designed and constructed the 5.4 MW system. SunPower also operates and maintains the high efficiency solar power system. The company has installed E20 series of solar panels at three airport locations: the rental car center and two East Economy garages. The construction of the solar system has been completed at the end of 2011. The project has received financial support from the Renewable Energy Incentive Program of Arizona Public Service Company (APS).
SunPower's solar technology will consistently produce clean energy for long term and will significantly reduce operational expenses without startup costs. The system is anticipated to meet 51% of the electricity need at the airport's toll plaza, rental car center and two East Economy parking garages. This will result in $4.7 million cost savings over the next 20 years. The system is estimated to eliminate annual production of over 5500 tons of carbon dioxide, which is equal to removing 19,800 cars off the roads in Arizona in the next 20 years.
