By running 10 propane autogas-powered buses for its fleet service, Davidson County Transportation is able to save thousands of dollars in fuel costs, while enhancing the air quality of the community.
Alliance AutoGas based in Asheville provided autogas vehicle conversions as well as an onsite fuel station to Davidson County Transportation. The company also assisted the fleet in securing a grant from the N.C. Solar Center.
Davidson County fleet runs 15 vehicles in total, of which 10 E450 vehicles are propane autogas-powered. Alliance AutoGas founding partner, Blossman Gas helped the fleet during the whole conversion process as well as in the 800-gallon autogas fuel station installation without an upfront cost, which allowed Davidson County to save fuel expenditures straightway. The fleet plans to convert two other larger vehicles this summer.
The Alliance AutoGas complete program for fleets comprises autogas vehicle conversions, fuel station installations at the fleet base, integration of data for fuel management systems, continuous technical support, and operational and safety training.
George Hodges, Manager at Davidson County Transportation, informed that drivers are happy with the performance of these green vehicles, which also helped in saving $1500 in fuel expenditures in the first month alone.
Blossman Gas’ General Manager, Jimmy Daley stated that propange autogas-powered fleets not only reduce fuel costs but also lower the emissions of greenhouse gases and adverse pollutants and improve the energy security of the nation as 98% of the supply is from the United States. Autogas is 30% cleaner-burning fuel when compared to gasoline and its implementation costs are comparatively much lower than other alternative fuels. For instance, the cost of autogas vehicle conversion is three times lower than that of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle conversion, while the cost of an autogas station installation is 15 folds lower than that of a CNG fueling station.
