Europe Switches on to Sustainable Energy During Special Week

From 18 to 22 June, sustainable energy will be in the spotlight across close to 40 countries. More than 30,000 participants will discuss energy efficiency and renewable energy in all their forms during the 2012 edition of EU Sustainable Energy Week. Today, a new video showing how small changes can make a big difference to our energy future is launched to start the Week.

Green video

The video is a trailer for the more than 600 events being held across the European Union and beyond – with everyone from industry, schools and local authorities to cities, transport companies and universities taking part.

Sustainable energy conference

The Week is an initiative of the European Commission’s Energy Directorate-General, which hosts a high-level policy conference in Brussels from 19 to 21 June. The varied programme includes sessions on all aspects of sustainable energy. This year, there is a particularly strong focus on investment, financing and business opportunities, with involvement from the European Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation, among others.

Awards

The winners of the prestigious Sustainable Europe Awards will be announced on 19 June in a ceremony hosted by European Commissioner for Energy, Günther H. Oettinger. The annual awards recognise outstanding renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in Europe, that demonstrate high impact and replication potential. This year, 262 projects from 14 EU Member States participated, alongside a number of pan-European partnerships. 25 have been shortlisted in five categories: Communicating, Consuming, Learning, Living and Travelling.

Sustainable Energy Europe Campaign

The EU Sustainable Energy Week is the key annual event of the Sustainable Energy Europe Campaign, which showcases activities dedicated to energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions. The event is organised by the Executive Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation (EACI) on behalf of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy.
