IBM Saved US$43 Million Last Year in Electricity Expenses

The ninth annual Corporate Responsibility Report was released recently by IBM. The report enumerates a year-to-year comparison of IBM’s citizenship and philanthropic projects, environmental ventures, community partnerships, and employment policies and practices.

As corporate responsibility is an important part of corporate culture at IBM, in 2011, the company excelled in sustainability solutions for energy conservation, data center energy efficiency and environmental responsibility resulting in saving the company US$43 million in electricity expenses and 378,000 MWh of electricity was conserved. The 2011 Corporate Responsibility Report states that the company not only reduced energy usage but also created a new model for secondary education and assisted small businesses grow using technology and skill.

The 2,300 energy conservation projects implemented by IBM involving 364 IBM facilities around the world resulted in saving 7.4% of the company’s total energy use and exceeded the annual goal of 3.5 %.

The corporate responsibility initiatives taken by IBM are mentioned in detail in the report. The following are some of the steps:

Conducted the biggest corporate community service event titled ‘Celebration of Service’, which provided more than 1,000 years worth of service by using 300,000 IBMers from around the world. They participated in 5,000 projects involving education, disaster relief response, healthcare, and conservation.

Increased IBM donations comprising cash, services and technology to US$196.1 million.

Acceleration of U.S. economic growth and job creation by forming a Supplier Connection, which will ensure that small-scale enterprises become suppliers to large companies.

Opened the Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) in New York City, which connects high school, college and career into one.

115 IBM employees were sent to 24 cities to participate in its Smarter Cities Challenge, where they assisted city leaders to formulate strategies to increase efficiency, economic growth and utilize citizens.
