UBM Studios, a company that creates digital environments, communities and events, conducted a year-long competition across its offices worldwide to reduce energy wastage.
The Chicago office of UBM Studios has emerged as the winner of the competition that commenced in May 2011 and ended in May 2012. UBM Studios, Chicago was awarded the gold amongst 50 other locations worldwide. The competition is part of UBM Studios’ endeavor to reduce its global carbon emissions by 5% within 2012.
Faye Bennett, the UBM Group’s Global Environmental Coordinator, stated that the program served to highlight the effort of every individual in the organization towards the goal of energy wastage reduction.
According to Kate Spellman, President of UBM studios, the company is already contributing to environmental conservation by virtue of its services in the digital environment space by facilitating online meetings, thereby reducing travel and enabling information to be downloaded and thus reducing printing costs.
The Chicago office of UBM Studios achieved a reduction in energy consumption by 28%. This was accomplished by a host of purchasing decisions such as procuring and installing energy-efficient lighting as well as energy-efficient photocopier, and deploying appliances with Energy Star and energy conservation measures such as lowering the office thermostat.
