Innu Takuaikan Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam (ITUM) declared that it will collaborate with three businesses for initiative that focuses on construction, development, and operation of wind energy projects on the Uashaunnuat community’s traditional territory. The project has a total estimated capacity of 250 MW.
With potential investment of over $1 B, the projects will create royalties and also offer 300 jobs at the time of construction phase and 30 jobs when the facilities become operational.
According to Chief Georges-Ernest Grégoire, these projects are considered as a critical development tool for the community. Focused on diversifying the economy, the organization anticipates the sustainable development projects to provide the community members with significant advantages. Windmills generate renewable energy, responding to the community's environmental issues.
Throughout the duration of the proposed projects, the Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam community will receive significant royalties on a yearly basis. ITUM’s partners include Transelec Common Inc (TCI), Northland Power, and Guodian United Power Technology Corporation Limited (UPC).
Northland Power’s President and CEO, John Brace said that the partnership with ITUM will inspire Northland Power to deliver the Quebec power grid with clean and green wind energy. In addition, this partnership will support ITUM's ongoing commitment to provide environmental sustainability to its community.
The economic benefit of the new ITUM partnership agreement complements the $5 M that resulted from entering into several contracts with other partners. Each contract value ranges between $2 M and $80 M, benefiting Innu businesses. Besides raising new infrastructures and supporting various initiatives in Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam, around 40 jobs have been created for the community members till date.
