Tesco, a major retailer in UK, has announced the opening of its first all-LED store in Loughborough. The new LED lighting systems in the store are expected to result in considerable savings in energy.
Tesco has installed energy-efficient LED fittings for lighting in the store’s sales areas as well as in the staff areas. The company has utilized LED fittings for all of the external signages for its new store. The freezer, fridges and the cold rooms are also lit by LEDs. LED lights can function at these low temperatures. Tesco could not replace its lighting for bakery ovens as LED lights were not able to function at such high temperatures.
In March 2012, Tesco opened a 'Zero Carbon' store at Cefn Mawr. The company has been conducting trials with new energy efficient technologies at these flagship stores. It will roll out energy efficient technologies that are successful to its other stores in the UK, which number around 2,700. These will also become a part of the company’s new-build programme.
Tesco’s Environmental Programme Manager, Emmily Sjolander, stated that the company has identified the potentiality of reducing energy usage by using LED light fittings. These will be especially beneficial for Express stores that have a low ceiling height and small size. The company will continue to develop new technologies to improve the energy efficiency at its stores, Sjolander said.
When compared to its other Express stores, Tesco’s new all-LED store is expected to realize savings of 30% in energy. This store is a part of its endeavor to become carbon neutral by 2050.
