Nestlé Nespresso Attains 75% Capsule Recycling Capacity Ahead of Schedule

Nestlé Nespresso, a reference and pioneer of the major portioned coffee segment declared that it has attained its 75% capsule recycling capacity objective a year ahead of schedule. Also Nespresso joined IUCN and other partners in presenting the Aluminum Stewardship initiative at the South Korean World Conservation Congress in Jeju.

The CEO of Nestlé Nespresso stated that aluminum guarantees the quality of its superior coffee. Also aluminum can be indefinitely recycled. Hence the company makes it easy for customers to return their aluminum capsules wither through their own collection systems or through national schemes or its own collection systems. In the year 2009, as part of the company’s Ecolaboration programme, Nespresso was determined to set up collection systems in order to make its capacity three times for recycling of used capsules to 75%. This recycling capacity has been globally certified and verified as 76.4% by Bureau Veritas, a compliance assessment and certification service. The global official capacity was 76.4% as of 30 June 2012 surpassing its initial plan of triple capacity.

The main reason for attaining this commitment of increasing its recycling capacity was by developing specific Nespresso recycling solutions where national packaging recycling schemes have not been available. Those specific solutions are:

Collection points in municipal waste collection points

Collection points at Nespresso points of sales and capsule delivery

Courier recovery of used capsules when new capsules are delivered

Till date Nespresso has installed around 20,000 dedicated capsule collection points in 19 of its markets. Furthermore, Nespresso has been able to constructively work with established national packaging schemes in Sweden, Germany and Finland.
