Advanced biofuels can help make our armed forces more energy secure and building new biorefineries will create good jobs across the country. The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) today thanked the Obama administration for announcing joint Navy, USDA and DOE awards to assist drop-in advanced biofuel companies and congratulated the companies receiving the awards.
Brent Erickson, executive vice president of BIO’s Industrial & Environmental Section, said, “Achieving energy security is critical to national security and military readiness, and the domestic advanced biofuel industry is attempting to do its part to help the U.S. military reach its goals. The price of oil is controlled by other countries, and oil dollars are flowing to terrorists groups. To achieve energy security, our military must have domestic, stably priced alternatives to foreign oil.
“The Navy has consistently played a role in incubating new technologies that secure U.S. leadership in energy. The advanced biofuel industry looks forward to continuing to work with them to make this program a success.
“The Renewable Fuel Standard presents another opportunity to encourage development of new technologies for advanced biofuels. Instability in that program is already hampering U.S. economic competitiveness and leadership for advanced biofuels.”
