The Centre for Carbon Measurement at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is a partner of Climate-KIC, which has just launched a new online CO2 meter to highlight current CO2 levels in the atmosphere and emphasise the urgent need to reduce harmful emissions.
The online meter combines a live data feed drawing on European data, updated regularly to show the precise level of CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere today, and comparison tools to show how CO2 levels have changed over time.
Jane Burston, head of the Centre for Carbon Measurement at NPL, welcomed the launch of the new online tool: "We need to know the real size of the challenge and to be able to measure the success or otherwise of our efforts in reducing emissions and mitigating climate change. This new online CO2 meter is the latest step in making that information available to as many people as possible."
The organisations involved in running the station and the CO2 equipment are Le Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE), through support from CNRS, CEA and OVSQ in France; NUI Galway's Centre for Climate & Air Pollution Studies (C-CAPS), the Irish Environmental Protection Agency; and the University of Bristol, through the Department of Energy & Climate Change in the UK.
Climate-KIC is the EU's main climate innovation initiative, bringing researchers and businesses across Europe and the rest of the world together to work on solutions to mitigate and adapt to climate change. As well as greenhouse gas monitoring, Climate-KIC's work also encompasses resource efficiency, sustainable cities and the built environment, amongst others.
The Centre for Carbon Measurement at NPL aims to reduce uncertainties in climate data, provide the robust measurement that is required to account for, price and trade carbon emissions, and help develop and accelerate the take up of low carbon technologies.
