More than 45 million connected wearables will be sold in 2015 around the world and that number will nearly triple by 2019 according to IDC’s forecasts. They estimate that orders for wearables such as smartwatches, bracelets, augmented reality glasses, clothing, and other wearable accessories will reach 126.1 million units by 2019. The explosion in new uses and on-board apps gives rise to new issues, the first of which is the devices’ power reliability and producing clean, sustainable energy.
Sunpartner Technologies, inventor of the invisible Wysips® photovoltaic film and solar NET (New Energy Technologies) specialist, provides a response to these new issues by powering connected devices and sensors with light. Wysips® transforms any surface into a solar panel that can generate its own energy from natural or artificial light—with no impact on aesthetics.
During the IDTechEX tradeshow, Sunpartner Technologies will present two energy harvesting solutions: Wysips® Crystal for screens and Wysips® Graphics for connected devices.
LiFi-compatible using Wysips® Connect, these two technologies also allow data transmission using light waves (VLC-Visible Light Communication), without power from the device’s battery.
Several solar telephone, intelligent case, and connected watch prototypes with Wysips® solar recharging technologies may be discovered at our stand (F16).
Also new in 2015: this small French company has made a round version of the invisible Wysips® Crystal photovoltaic component in order to facilitate the technology’s integration in connected watch screens and a flexible, ultra-thin version in order to meet the needs of high-end screen and smartphone manufacturers with the increasing use of curved screens. This flexible development of the invisible Wysips® Crystal photovoltaic component is 5 times thinner than previously (0.1 mm thick) while maintaining identical performance.

Wysips® Crystal : empowering the screens
Wysips® Crystal creates its own perpetual energy reserves, producing electricity by capturing ambient light. Installed under the touch screen panel during the manufacturing process, the invisible photovoltaic component
Wysips® Crystal helps prolong the battery life of the phone or other equipement (e-book, e-reader, watche, ESL…).—all while being design neutral. This means users can now access essential features and applications even when the battery is fully discharged.
Wysips® Crystal is unique due to its unprecedented combination of optical and photovoltaic properties. Ultra thin (≤ 0.5 mm), transparent (up to 90%, preserving visual and functional quality), flexible (to fit curved surfaces), it works with all kinds of screen technology, including MEMMS, bistable, LCD, OLED, and optical screens.
To date, the power generated by the component reaches 2.5 milliwatts of power per square centimeter for a transparence rate up to 90% and under typical sunlight conditions (1 sun), providing 2 or 4 extra minutes of communication time or 10 minutes listen music for 10 minutes of exposure on a 3G network. By the end of 2015, Sunpartner technologies want to increase the powerful of the component (4Mw/cm2).
Wysips® Graphics : Making Devices Smarter than Ever
Wysips® Graphics works with mobile electronics and their accessories by integrating invisibly into their original design and providing them with an additional, free, and inexhaustible power source.
The design-neutral PV component marries with all types of textures and adapts to all non-glass, opaque surfaces, no matter how small: phone casings, tablet and e-reader covers, watch dials, eyeglass frames, and that’s just the beginning!
Thanks to Wysips® Graphics, devices can produce their own energy from natural or artificial light and use it to recharge the battery, power sensors, guarantee emergency operation, and even receive audio and video data via LiFi, thanks to its compatibility with Wysips® Connect.
About Sunpartner Technologies
Founded in 2008, Sunpartner Technologies is an engineering company specializing in Solar NETs (New Energy Technologies). They develop invisible or transparent solar energy solutions that are completely design neutral and seamlessly integrate into target products. In particular, the company invented Wysips® (What You See Is Photovoltaic Surface), which has 4 mature technologies: Wysips® Crystal for screens, Wysips® Glass integrated into glazing,, Wysips® Cameleon for signs and billboards, Wysips® Graphics for connected objects. Sunpartner Technologies has regularly received awards both for its innovation and from the business community, such as the Nobel Sustainability® Clean Tech Company award in 2013 and Technology Pioneer 2014 from the World Economic Forum. The company was also named one of the Top 100 Global Cleantech companies in 2014. Based in Aix-en-Provence (France), the company has a team of 53 employees.
