First Building Materials Manufacturer to Earn the Distinction of Climate Action Leader

USG Corporation, a leading building products company, announced today that it has certified its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory with the California Climate Action Registry, becoming the first building materials manufacturer to earn the distinction of Climate Action Leader(TM). USG is now publicly and voluntarily reporting its GHG emissions under the country's most rigorous voluntary GHG reporting program.

“USG has a long-term track record and solid history of environmentally-friendly manufacturing practices,” said William C. Foote, USG Corporation Chairman and CEO. “As a founding member of the U.S. Green Building Council, and now the first building materials manufacturer to be certified as a Climate Action Leader™, my colleagues and I are proud to further demonstrate USG’s commitment to sound environmental practices.”

The Registry, created by the California legislature in 2000 is a private, non-profit that helps companies and organizations throughout California track, publicly report and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The results are verified by independent third-parties to ensure compliance with the Registry protocols and standardization across participants and sectors. Organizations that are willing to meet the accounting standards and third party certification requirements of the Registry show their serious intent to address climate change. The Registry has been widely recognized as a gold standard for public reporting of greenhouse gases.

“We are thrilled that USG has earned the status of Climate Action Leader™”, said Gary Gero, President of the California Climate Action Registry. “We believe that USG’s example helps set a positive tone and a meaningful standard of energy efficiency in the building materials manufacturing industry. We foresee manufacturers across California following their initiative.”

The California Climate Action Registry is a private non-profit partnership that serves as a voluntary greenhouse gas registry to protect, encourage, and promote early actions to reduce GHG emissions. Over 280 major companies, cities, government agencies and NGOs measure and publicly report their GHG emissions through the registry, www.climateregistry.org.
