JA Solar Holdings Co., Ltd. (JA Solar), one of the world's largest manufacturers of high-performance solar power products, today announced that it had provided 11MW of high-efficiency PV modules for a power project in the Red Sea region of Egypt. Developed by Masdar, funded by the government of Abu Dhabi, it is the largest PV-diesel hybrid power project in North Africa.
The project is designed to provide electricity for the tourism industry in the Red Sea region. Consisting of four power plants -- Marsa Alam, Shalateen, Abu Ramad and Halayeb -- with a combined capacity of 14MW, the project combines existing diesel generators with new PV modules. The hybrid design will lead to significant savings in costs associated with the purchase and transportation of diesel oil, and significant reductions in CO2 emissions. Upon completion, the project is expected to provide electricity for 25,800 households and reduce CO2 emissions by 42,700 tons annually.
Mr. Jian Xie, President of JA Solar, commented, "Because the project is located in the desert and will experience extreme climatic conditions, it has stringent requirements for highly reliable modules. Our winning bid demonstrates the high quality and reliability of our modules and the broad international recognition of our products. We are committed to meeting the diverse needs of our customers through innovations in technology and improvements in product performance, while seizing opportunities to make a positive contribution to solving the world's increasingly serious energy problems."
