Octopus Energy Launches Major Partnership with Volkswagen to Fast-Track Uptake of Electric Vehicles

Octopus Energy, the EnTech pioneer, today announced a significant new partnership with the world’s largest car manufacturer, Volkswagen Group. The deal encourages VW customers to reduce carbon emissions and Electric Vehicle (EV) running costs by switching their home electricity and gas supply to the UK’s fastest growing green energy provider.

Transport's continuing reliance on fossil fuels has seen it remain the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions by any industry in the UK, accounting for 34% of all emissions in 2019. Volkswagen will be offering customers in the UK who move to Octopus Energy’s renewable energy tariffs and purchase an electric vehicle a credit of up to £90 to their energy account. For the ID.3, Volkswagen’s newest electric car, this equates to 8,000 clean, green, free miles. The offer will also be available to existing Octopus Energy customers who purchase an EV from one of the participating Volkswagen brands.

Greg Jackson, CEO and founder of Octopus Energy, commented: “Tackling climate change means focusing on the biggest polluters, so switching transportation from dirty fossil fuels to clean green power has to be top of the agenda. It’s super exciting to see the world’s largest car manufacturer fully commit to electric vehicles – the only way to decarbonise our roads and protect our planet. Our partnership with Volkswagen is an important step towards transitioning to a renewable energy future globally, and we can’t wait to get started.”

Octopus Energy has been driving the UK’s transition to electric vehicles for more than two years. Launched in June 2018, it’s revolutionary Octopus Go tariff was the UK’s first ‘time of use’ tariff designed specifically for EV owners, offering four hours of cheap green electricity at 5p/kWh every night.

The partnership began with Volkswagen on 18 September 2020, with the Group’s Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA and Cupra brands, following in the Autumn
