More than 50,000 homes and businesses across the Dee Valley, north Shropshire and Cheshire are now benefitting from a £5.5 million investment from SP Energy Networks that future-proofs the local electricity network for a cleaner and greener future.
The completed works are the first in a wider five-year investment programme, which will see SP Energy Networks invest £200 million in its 132kV network in England and Wales up to 2028.
The recently-completed network upgrade involved the modernisation of 42 km of overhead power lines across Wrexham, Whitchurch and Crewe, as well as the refurbishment of 225 structures to secure a more modern and resilient network for future needs.
Mark Sobczak, 132kV General Manager at SP Energy Networks, said: “Investment like this will ensure our electricity network not only delivers for the here and now, but is ready to support our customers as they make the move to electric vehicles and ditch their gas boilers for electric heating – all of which will contribute to a doubling of demand for electricity as we head towards the 2050 net zero targets.
“The completion of this project is a significant milestone for people, businesses and communities across Wrexham, Whitchurch and Crewe, who we kept informed throughout, and we thank them for their support and cooperation while we carried out these important works.
“Together, we can look forward to a cleaner, greener and better future.”
