More than one million Americans have joined T. Boone Pickens and his Pickens Army in their fight to reduce this country’s dependence on foreign oil. The Pickens Army reached its goal of one million members in just three months.
“In less than a month, the next President of the United States will be elected. The million people who have joined the Pickens Army are sending a strong message to the candidates that America cannot continue on this path of spending as much as $700 billion a year on foreign oil,” Pickens said. “The Pickens Plan is the only plan that exists right now and it is clear that these million Americans are calling on the next president to enact this plan within the first 100 days of the new administration.”
The Pickens Army is not stopping with Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain. In the last month, more than 100,000 supporters have asked their elected officials to sign the Pickens Pledge and many are listening. Thus far, two U.S. Senators, 37 U.S. Congressmen and 9 Governors have signed the pledge.
“The Pickens Plan continues to receive overwhelming support and I applaud the Army in its commitment to push Washington to take action on an energy plan,” Pickens said. “There is still a lot of work to be done, but reaching our goal of one million members is a substantial movement towards changing America’s energy future and security.”
To recognize the Army’s hard work, Pickens has highlighted several of the members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty during his BooneCam last weekend. Pickens first recognized Kim Anderson of Barrington, Rhode Island who started the “100 Club,” which encourages other Pickens supporters to each gather the support of 100 signatures for the Pickens Pledge. Mike Johnston of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania was also acknowledged for his commitment to actively blogging on the Plan. Lastly, Pickens thanked Joe Maddalone of Scranton University for garnering support across the collegiate level in the Pickens Plan campaign initiative “Pickens U” which resulted in a dozen Pickens Plan support chapters at other colleges and universities.
Unveiled on July 8, 2008 by T. Boone Pickens, the Pickens Plan is detailed solution for ending the United States’ growing dependence on foreign oil, which costs the country as much as $700 billion per year. The plan calls for investing in power generation from domestic renewable resources such as wind and using our abundant supplies of natural gas as a transportation fuel, replacing more than one-third of our imported and saving more than $230 billion a year.
