ARCADIS (EURONEXT: ARCAD), the international consultancy, design and engineering company, announced today that it has one a large remediation contract in Milan, Italy. The contract has a size of EUR 8 million for the remediation of a stretch of land that is being cleaned up for new building development. ARCADIS will undertake the remediation on behalf of a consortium of companies that is developing the site. It is the first large contract in Italy since ARCADIS acquired an Italian environmental company named SET (now ARCADIS SET) as recent as July of this year. No further financial details were given.
Located some 10km from the center of Milan, the site was refilled with soil and waste material in the 1960s and 1970s. ARCADIS SET has conducted a site investigation, risk assessment and remedial/containment design which has freed the way for the construction of some 1,500 apartments. Meanwhile, the government has granted its approval for the development. Remediation activities will consist of excavation, pre-treatment and off-site disposal of "hot spots" as well as installation of surface water collection systems, gas drainage systems and capping of the whole area with residual contamination.
"The recent acquisition of SET is already bearing fruit. With this acquisition ARCADIS has access to the Italian environmental market, while it served SET to strengthen its position in that market because it can make use of ARCADIS' in depth know-how and multinational client roster. This new contract underlines the attractiveness of the Italian environmental market," according to ARCADIS Executive Board member Michiel Jaski, responsible for the European activities.
