Bio-Tec Environmental has just completed a new round of "green products" testing on its biodegradable plastic solution EcoPure, its second generation additive that makes green products by turning regular plastic into biodegradable plastic. This results in environmentally sustainable products. The ASTM D5511 test was run on polypropylene, PVC, PE and EVA--the most common plastics in use today--at an independent lab, and the results are conclusive that EcoPure makes plastics biodegrade in a microbial rich environment, when used at a .7% concentration.
The material has already been shown to be perfectly safe for food and drug packaging, and meets FDA standards. Thus plastic made with the addition of EcoPure makes green products. The EcoPure allows microbes to digest the carbon inside the complex plastic chain (known as a polymer). This has two benefits. First, the plastic breaks down into simple organic compounds so that it ceases to be a burden on future generations as regular plastic is. It also creates methane which can be captured from the landfill and used for energy production. Thus, EcoPure results in an easy, sustainable solution for our environment.
Based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bio-Tec was founded in 2003 by company President John Lake and Executive Vice President Samuel Adams. Their first success was with Bio-Batch, a unique product that made plastic biodegradable. EcoPure achieves even greater biodegradability in even lower concentrations, making even more effective green products. This new round of testing is just the next step in their endless quest to find solutions to the problem of synthetic plastic materials: their inability to break down through natural processes. The company also recently developed a version of EcoPure for use in clear PET, and continues to work on variations that will meet the needs over every plastic fabricator.
