Calpine has set up a number of geothermal power plants for the generation of electricity from clean sources. Some of the major power plants of the company include the Bear Canyon, Big Geysers, Calistoga, Cobb Creek, Eagle Rock, Grant, Lake View, McCabe, Quicksilver, Ridge Line, Socrates, Sonoma, Sulphur Springs and West Ford Flat.
The Bear Canyon, a geothermal power plant established by Calpine, is situated at The Geysers in North California. As part of two 10-megawatt power generation contracts, the electricity generated at this power plant is supplied to and utilized by PG&E. The Bear Canyon site includes the geothermal plant along with its collaborated steam fields. An advantage of this power plant is that electricity is produced while maintaining minimal levels of air emissions, thus ensuring a clean and safe environment at all times.
The Bear Canyon geothermal plant, wholly owned and operated by Calpine, was established in May 1989. The base load capacity of this power plant is 14 megawatts, both at normal and peaking states. The turbines used for electricity generation at the Bear Canyon power plant are from international turbine manufacturering companies such as Mitsubishi. A part of the electricity produced in the Bear Canyon geothermal power plant is also supplied to the NERC region of WECC.
