Canadian Solar to Develop 200 Megawatt Module Manufacturing Facility in Ontario

Canadian Solar announced on 3 December, 2009 that it has planned to start  with the site selection and approval process in order to develop a 200 megawatt module manufacturing facility in Ontario.

Canadian Solar supplies solar farm,  solar modules for commercial and residential markets, solar cells, turnkey solutions and custom-designed solar application products. Decisions about the selected site, its size and cost are expected to be finalized in the first quarter of the year 2010. FIT applications have been submitted to Ontario Power Authority, and Canadian Solar has already started to receive attention from customers who are interested in buying solar systems from Ontario Solar.

About 500 direct manufacturing jobs, and electricity supply to 60,000 homes every year is expected to be established by this new facility. Canadian Solar will be regarded as a leading manufacture of solar modules once this plant is completed. The entire plant is expected to cover an approximate of C$24 million and the plant will be completed in different stages where the very first of its operations will begin in the year 2010. Canadian Solar aims to fulfill the solar Ontario content requirements of FIT commercial rooftop solar and microFIT 10 kilowatt.

The growing solar industry of Ontario is expected to be improved by the manufacturing facility of Canadian Solar. Dr. Shawn Qu, Chairman and CEO of Canadian Solar, remarked that with this new facility the company’s photovoltaic technology will be made readily available in Ontario, for those who are prepared to take advantage of the FIT programs. Qu also suggested an expansion in the availability of new skilled jobs.

An Ontario based manufacturing facility is expected to be developed by the provincial and federal programs that will be explored by Canadian Solar.  Hammerbacher, President of the subsidiary, Canadian Solar Solutions, remarked that the company expects to create new jobs and an efficient solar market in Ontario by working along with the government that aims in investing in a low carbon economy.

The Turnkey solutions enable easy and cost effective installations with appropriate reliability and supreme quality. The silicon-based Canadian Solar panels possess a warranty for 25 years and they also possess the capability to be operated in all kinds of weather conditions that exist all over the world.
