Anheuser-Busch, a leading American brewer, has promised to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Leaders program to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions at its operations and breweries by 5% from the year, 2005 through the year 2010. Anheuser-Busch had given this commitment in the year 2007 at the time of joining EPA’s Climate Leaders program. Anheuser-Busch has met its goal to reduce the emissions one year ahead of schedule. This achievement was commended at the Climate Leaders Partners’ annual meeting on December 2, 2008.
Lisa Jackson, Administrator of the U.S. EPA, said that there is no choice between environment and economy and EPA’s Climate Leaders are sending a strong message to that effect. He added that the Climate Leaders are contributing in the fight against greenhouse gas emissions and climate change and empowering the consumers to endorse environmentally responsible choices.
Anheuser-Busch's U.S. operation has again committed to further reduce the emissions by another 15% by the year, 2013 with respect to the data of the year 2008.. This pledge was given while receiving advanced certification for achieving its goal from the Climate Leaders program.
Peter Kraemer, Vice President of Supply for Anheuser-Busch, praised the company employees for their sustained efforts to reduce the emission level and help the company to reach this significant milestone. He commented that as of October the U.S. breweries manufactured and packed one in six beers by using alternative fuels.
Anheuser-Busch has taken many steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions such as adopting energy efficiency programs for reduced use of fuel and electricity. Its brewery located at Houston uses landfill gas and the company has constructed its 10th bio-energy systems (BERS) at its Fairfield brewery. Some of the Anheuser-Busch’s breweries are collaborating with solar companies and the company is looking at various options to use alternative fuels that best suits their operations. The company has made substantial reduction in the use of water and other resources. Since 2007, the company has reduced the use of water by almost 37%.
Peter Kraemer remarked that everyone at Anheuser-Busch has an important role to play for protecting as well as improving the environment and aims to be the number one company in a better world.
