Hydro-Quebec will be focusing on the advancement of its project which aims in generating 7.6 megawatts of electricity from landfill gas collected at Waste Management’s site in the Saint-Nicephore district of Drummondville. Waste Management is delighted by this decision of Hydro-Quebec. Waste Management is a chief provider of waste management services in North America.
The selection of the project was based on competitive rates, energy efficiency and environmental benefits. This environmental project promoted by Waste Management, has been confirmed of its enforcement through the announcement made by the Quebec Crown Corporation. Sufficient electricity to power about 6,500 homes is expected to be produced by 1 December 2012 with the help of landfill gas obtained from the decomposition of buried waste.
The Waste Management project will fuel engines that are connected to generators, which in turn will produce electricity. The heat obtained from these engines will be used to feed the Serres Demers greenhouse complex. Greenhouses on Waste Management’s land will be built by the company to grow tomatoes.
A financial investment from Waste Management is required to harness landfill gas for energy. A total of about 125 workers will be required for the construction and installation process. Waste Management through this project of converting landfill gas into electricity aims in doubling the production of green energy in all its facilities by the year 2020 and to supply this electricity to two million homes all over North America.
Waste Management has managed to develop a unique experience in this area through the establishment of more than 100 beneficial-use gas projects in the continent. This experience has enabled Waste Management to provide an equivalent electricity of more than 470 megawatts that is capable of supplying power to almost 400,000 homes.
