Five of the top ten spots on the 2010 list of Canada’s Top 100 infrastructure projects have been claimed by renewable energy projects with a total investment of $18.3 billion. An annual Top 100 Infrastructure Projects list published by ReNew Canada represents more than $68 billion in infrastructure investment for Canada.
The inclusion of 46 new projects in the 2010 list indicates the strong growth of the infrastructure industry in Canada without the support of the federal government’s Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. This Infrastructure Stimulus Fund is not involved in funding in any of the Top 100 projects.
The leading project in the 2010 list is Hydro-Quebec’s $6.5-billion renewable energy project is situated along northern Quebec’s Romaine River. This project is one of the utility’s four projects that are in the list. Hydro-Quebec project will create 975 jobs in each of its construction years.
The traditional generation projects continue to maintain a strong position though renewable energy projects have occupied the leading positions in the 2010 list of Canada’s Top 100 infrastructure projects. Keephills 3 Generating Plant in Alberta is taking advantage of new federal funding for sequestration and carbon capture projects.
A great number of the projects on the report are from the health care sector. These projects exceed all other projects on the Top 100 list and they also account for 18 of the 34 public-private partnerships put up on the list.
