Ballard Power Systems in partnership with Danfoss A/S and Dantherm A/S has acquired a controlling stake in Dantherm Power that is based in Denmark. Dantherm Power is a developer of backup power systems for various telecom equipment suppliers including Ericsson and Motorola.
Dantherm Power, using hydrogen fuel cell technology developed by Ballard Power systems, manufactures clean energy backup power systems. The joint investment in Dantherm Power is anticipated to speed up the development of the clean energy power backup applications throughout Europe.
John Sheridan, Ballard's President and CEO, said that Dantherm Power is a well established supplier of fuel cell backup power systems for the telecommunication sector including fuel cell installations for telecom service providers and for TETRA emergency networks in Europe. John Sheridan stated that Ballard through this investment, in addition to supplying power modules and fuel stacks, will be providing complete power backup systems to companies including Baxi Innotech, IdaTech, ISE Corporation, and Plug Power.
President and CEO of Dantherm A/S, Torben Duer, said that Dantherm Power is a supplier of clean energy power backup systems to some of its important customers such as Motorola and this investment will accelerate the growth of clean energy power in the backup telecom market.
Between 2010 and 2012, Ballard Power Systems will be investing $6 million in two tranches for a controlling interest in Dantherm Power. The company will continue its commercial activities including marketing of hydrogen-based products containing fuel cell stack from Ballard. Dantherm A/S and Danfoss A/S will provide marketing support through the companies’ sales network throughout the world in addition to cash investment.
