Waste Water Geothermal Project by Borealis GeoPower

Borealis GeoPower is working on the development of a geothermal energy pilot project that involves using heated waste water. The project is being developed in an oilfield in the Canadian Foothills. The waste water from deep oil and gas wells will be used to generate electricity. This is a co-production research project, in which the company is involved. The project site comprises numerous deep end of life gas and oil wells that are readily available with hot water resource.

The Canadian oilfield geothermal project has the potential to increase the energy efficiency of the oilfield with the hot water resource. The geothermal project actually provides carbon offsets to the oil and gas companies that are involved in the oilfield. At present, Borealis GeoPower is in discussion with oil and gas partners, who run production programs based on waste heat at more than 80 degrees Celsius temperature.

Funding has been approved for the co-production research project through the Alberta Energy Research Institute (AERI): Clean Air and Climate Change: Technology and Innovation Initiative. As per the request from AERI, the company has submitted the project design to the Alberta Energy and Alberta Environment, which is located in Edmonton, Alberta. The company has also presented some of the initial reports on the research and development of the project at the CanGEA conference and Global Petroleum Show.
