Building Automation System Focuses on Energy Efficiency

The new version 4.1 of the Desigo building automation and control system from Siemens’ Building Technologies Division brings a host of new features aimed at increasing the energy efficiency of buildings. The most important novelties are AirOptiControl, which offers innovative comfort control for ventilation and air conditioning plants, and energy reports.

The wizard-based energy report feature helps to create energy reports quick and without any problems.

With the new control strategy AirOptiControl for ventilation and air conditioning plants, Siemens’ Building Technologies Division expands its portfolio of energy-efficient applications for use with the Desigo building automation and control system. The application optimizes the volumetric air flow, thus providing an excellent basis for highly energy-efficient operation of ventilation and air conditioning plants. At the same time, comfort control ensures that the limit values of temperature, humidity and indoor air quality are observed.

The innovative standard application library is of modular design and contains several plant variants for controlling air handling plant or for optimizing fan operation. Also, demand control can be varied depending on the type of VAV control equipment installed. VAV control is suited for the control of individual rooms and zones, whereby basic load heating control is integrated. Naturally, the application offers all graphics for operating the plant via Desigo Insight and provides trend logging for air handling plants and rooms. With the help of the Desigo tool, the various choices available with AirOptiControl can be configured in a very straightforward way.

Thanks to significant energy savings in comparison with conventional applications for the control of ventilation plants, AirOptiControl not only cuts maintenance costs but also shortens the payback period. As a tested application with comprehensive documentation, AirOptiControl ensures time and cost savings in terms of engineering, commissioning and operation. What’s more, optimization is achieved through control only – bothersome hardware adjustments on the plant are no longer required.

Energy reports make energy consumption transparent
With the energy reports delivered by Desigo V4.1, Building Technologies responds to the rising demand for statistical analyses of energy-related data. The required data are automatically retrieved from the process units which record the values delivered by the field devices. It is thus possible to produce a number of different reports, depending on the requirements, including reports on energy consumption, energy costs, CO2 emissions and comfort requirements.

In addition to AirOptiControl and energy reports, Desigo’s new version 4.1 offers a number of new features, such as extremely simplified integration of the Sinteso FS20 fire control panel into the Desigo Insight management station. Now, using BACnet and TX Open, third-party products can be integrated into Desigo even more straightforwardly. The support of all current software platforms and various software updates ensure the protection of investments and better efficiency of the entire system.

The Desigo building automation is part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2009, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about EUR23 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of ecofriendly technologies. In the same period, the company’s products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons. This amount equals the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.
