A 12.6-kW solar energy system was completed by Tanner Creek Energy at the Northwoods Nursery's operations site in Molalla, Oregon. Northwoods Nursery, which operates through its One Green World, is a grower of unusual ornamentals and unique fruiting edibles for retail as well as for wholesale markets.
In the nursery industry, Northwoods Nursery has been a leader in sustainable practices since it began its operations in 1979. The investment in the solar system is to provide electricity to meet a part of the power needs of its Molalla operation. The roof-mounted solar energy system is tied to the grid and is installed on the roof of its multi-use building. Jim Gilbert, owner of Northwoods Nursery, said the solar system will help the company to meet 10% of its annual electricity needs.
Other sustainable practices adopted by Northwoods Nursery include water and energy conservation, waste management system, electric car usage by its employees for on-site transportation, and biodiesel operated equipment. Founder of Tanner Creek Energy, Alan Hickenbottom, said the company is pleased to help Northwoods Nursery to adopt sustainable business practices and to reduce its energy costs.
