Spanish Utility Company to Develop 80 Megawatts of Wind Farms in UK Landfill Sites

Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC) announced that it will be developing wind farms across several landfill sites in UK through its subsidiary, Waste Recycling Group (WRG). FCC, a leading energy and infrastructure group, has in its possession over 100 landfill sites in the UK. The company will be investing £100 million for its first wind energy initiative in the country.

Several incineration facilities that convert waste into energy are already being operated by WRG at its landfill sites and this latest green initiative will make use of WRG’s landfill sites in the UK. The company said that producing eco-friendly power locally will not only lessen concerns for energy security but also reduce inefficiencies during distribution. The company further stated that the power generated from its new wind farms will help to fill the expected energy gap arising due to the decommissioning  of old coal and nuclear plants in the country.

WRG and FCCE (FCC Energy), FCC’s another subsidiary, will jointly manage the new wind initiative. Suitable sites for the development of wind farms will be identified by WRG from its portfolio. FCC currently has 533 MW power generating capacity from renewable sources in Spain and the UK. FCCE’s renewable energy portfolio includes 14 wind farms in Spain totaling 422 MW and two 10-MW photovoltaic plants in south of Spain. The company is also developing two CSP (concentrated solar power) facilities in the country.
