A new advanced flagship data center was unveiled by Affiliated Computer Services at Telford. This data centre has green features such as cutting down its carbon emissions while reducing electricity costs. The facility could serve as a model for the industry.
The data centre that combines advanced technology with high-quality green ratings cost £2 million ($3 million USD) to construct. The 418-square meter (4,500 square feet) data center is expected to reduce the energy costs up to 70% resulting in reduction of carbon emissions of about 4,200 metric tones per annum.
During the unveiling function of the data center, ACS CEO Lynn Blodgett, commented that innovative design of the facility makes good commercial as well as environmental sense. The facility has been so designed that any upgrades in the future can be carried out without affecting the services to clients or downtime.
The company’s data centre capabilities in Telford at present are now expanded to over 1,300 square meter (14,000 square feet) with the addition of this new data centre. In 1999, ACS acquired the site and currently over 200 people are employed in the Telford facility. The company has additional data centers and offices in Altrincham, Bristol and London providing support to over 600 clients from both public and private sectors.
IBM was selected by ACS to design and construct the new data center. DCPM (Data Centre Performance Management) solutions from nLyte Software was deployed in the data centre to run its green programme. Nimsoft provided the monitoring and automation tools and Convergence Group the network connectivity.
