J. C. Penney Company’s energy efficient operations, which helps to reduce its impact on the environment and protect environmental resources, has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) thorough a 2010 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award. The company has received ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year awards in 2007 and 2008 and this the second time it is being honored with the Sustained Excellence Award since then.
EPA assistant administrator, Gina McCarthy, said JCPenney has been recognized with this award for its comprehensive approach to reduce energy usage across its entire operations by integrated superior energy management systems into its overall objectives. This is the main reason that EPA is honoring JCPenney with the 2010 Sustained Excellence Award, McCarthy said.
JCPenney is the first retailer in the country to receive Sustained Excellence award for its inclusive approach to energy management. The company has invested over $10 million in 2009 to augment its energy efficiency. Some of the measure adopted by the company includes installation of advanced meter technology, HVAC (high-efficiency heating, ventilation and air-conditioning), and lighting retrofits in all its stores throughout the country. The company is utilizing solar power in nine of its locations.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of JCPenney, Myron E. (Mike) Ullman, III, commented that it is the responsibility of everyone to reduce their environmental impact. He further added that the award demonstrates the diligent work of its associates to achieve energy conservation.
