The launch of two solar photovoltaic parks with a total capacity of 18 MW was marked by a groundbreaking ceremony in Ontario, Canada. Both the projects are to be located in Norfolk County. Distinguished guests who took part in the ceremony include Dave Levac, Parliamentary Assistant to Ontario's Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and MPP for Brant and Dennis Travale, Mayor of Norfolk County.
MEMC Electronic Materials’ subsidiary, SunEdison and SkyPower Limited will develop these two solar projects, named SunE Sky Norfolk I and II, under a joint venture. As per the contract terms, the two solar parks will be owned and financed by SunEdison and SkyPower and the energy generated will be bought by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA).
During the first year of their operation, the combined output of the solar projects is expected to be more than 19 million kWh. Over a 20-year period, 400 million kWh of electricity is expected to be generated. The power generated from these parks is enough to meet the electricity needs of 33,000 households. They also will help to curtail the emissions of 250,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the environment.
Dave Levac, said the solar parks will increase the renewable energy supply in the province, which will not only help to fight against climate change but also reduce dependence on fossil fuels. These two projects mark a significant milestone in the efforts of Ontario to create a leading clean power market, Levac added.
Dennis Travale, Mayor of Norfolk County, said the projects such as SunE Sky Norfolk are green job creators for Canadians. President and CEO of SkyPower, Kerry Adler, said the company is delighted to break ground for its second and third solar plants in Ontario.
