Assyce Fotovoltaica Builds Largest First Solar Free-Field Solar Power Plant in Spain

Assyce Fotovoltaica, a system integrator in Spain, is building the biggest First Solar free-field solar power facility in Spain. The power plant, which is located in Extremadura, covers 69 hectares of land area and the capacity of the plant is more than 26 MWp. When the power facility is completed by the end of 2010, it will produce more than 42 million kWh of electricity per annum.

Managing Director of Assyce Fotovoltaica, Luis Garrido, commented that the area where the project is sited is conducive for photovoltaic power production. The south of Spain has high levels of solar radiation. Due to the adoption of an advanced transformer technology the yield of the electricity is improved. When compared to conventional power plants, there is considerable reduction in electricity loss, Garrido said. The project comprises inverter systems from SMA Technology AG, 36 transformer stations, and 337,000 solar modules.

Luis Garrido said the solar modules are very durable and effective and are ideal for use in hot climates. First Solar and Assyce Fotovoltaica have been partnering for years with great success. The modules from First Solar offer a great level of reliable operation for the project. In January, the solar power plant’s construction commenced and is expected to be completed by the end of 2010. The project will avoid 30 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and the electricity generated is enough to meet the energy needs of over 14,000 average homes for a full year.
