The Detroit Free Press has plans to honor individuals, businesses and community groups at the breakfast of the first Michigan Green Leaders awards program. The program is planned on April 22, which is regarded as ‘Earth Day’ at Belle Isle’s Detroit Yacht Club. Bill Ford, Executive Chairman of Ford Motor and a supporter of green environment initiatives, will deliver the keynote address during the program.
The state of Michigan has taken initiatives to expand its economy and create job opportunities in the solar and wind energy segments, as well as to find ways to fuel vehicles using eco-friendly alternative energy.
To appreciate such sustained efforts in ecological innovation, the Free Press has called for nominations to identify recent innovations and the leadership behind them. A total of 350 nominations covering individuals and people engaged in political and industrial segments were received for the award. The nominations included a variety of eco- friendly achievements such as recycling initiatives at the workplace and introduction of progressive environment friendly technologies.
Without being bound by categories and the need for awarding a specific number of awards, 16 winners were selected in recognition of their eco-friendly efforts by an independent jury. The winners symbolize a cross section of civic community groups, educators, major industry, activists and small businesses. The winners will be felicitated on the 40th anniversary of the Earth Day on 22nd April 2010.
The Detroit Free Press is planning to support and make ‘The Michigan Green Leaders’ a regular annual event.
