Verizon Wireless Store Receives LEED Gold Certification

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) has given LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification to a Communications Store of Verizon Wireless located in Avondale, Arizona.

The LEED Green Building Rating System is a standard for the construction, design and operation of green buildings with high performance. The design of the Avondale store customizes energy and water consumption, reduces waste and increases indoor environmental quality.

The environmental benefits offered by the store include: using high efficiency lighting that reduced energy consumption by 51%. Reduction in carbon footprint from energy management system; using recycled-content materials in places such as display and flooring fixtures and ceiling tiles; serving as the HopeLine phone recycling program of Verizon Wireless. The collected phones are refurbished for reuse and resale or disposed in an environment-friendly manner.

Verizon Wireless’ acting regional president Brian Danfield commented that with the approach of Earth Day 2010, the company intends to highlight how Avondale residents can work together with corporations to create a more ‘green’ environment.
