Marcos Jank, the CEO and President of the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA), in a key message presented to Pascal Lamy, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, mentioned that if countries are to realize their goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, they will have to lift the high tariffs currently imposed on clean technologies.
Pascal Lamy paid a visit to the Sao Martinho bioelectricity, sugar and ethanol plant located in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The plant processed voluminous quantities of sugarcane of 8.1 million tons during the harvest season of 2009/2010.
Marcos Jank stressed the importance of ethanol being considered as a worldwide energy commodity. To this end, UNICA requires that the classification of customs for ethanol be changed so as to realize the benefits of ethanol as an alternative, low-carbon energy solution.
Also during the presentation, Marcos Jank spoke on the increase in suggestions for legally binding standards, created by individual countries and institutions for ensuring sustainable production of goods.
