Poyry Study Says Wind Energy Decreases Power Costs

A study published by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) has concluded that wind energy decreases carbon dioxide emissions and electricity prices.

Conducted by the consultancy Poyry AS, the study titled 'Wind Energy and Electricity Prices' is a detailed analysis of the impact wind energy has on electrical energy prices. The study brings together findings from case-studies in Belgium, Denmark, and Germany.

The study revealed that electrical energy prices dropped 3 to 23 EUR/MWh based on the wind energy amount. The Chief Executive of EWEA Christian Kjaer stated that the study further substantiates the already existing findings proving that wind power decreases carbon dioxide emissions.

The report also finds that wind energy replaces production technologies that are carbon dioxide intensive. During low demand hours, hard coal power plants get replaced by wind and during high demand hours, gas fired power plants get replaced by wind.
