Mercury Solar Systems Collaborates with NREL on Solar Energy Research

Solar integrator Mercury Solar Systems is partnering with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to enhance solar energy research. Data for one of NREL’s own research will be taken from the solar test-bed of Mercury Solar Systems.

The solar test-bed is a solar photovoltaic testing plant. The solar system will be installed on the rooftop of the headquarters of Mercury Solar Systems in Westchester County, NY. The system is expected to be functional by late summer of this year. The project will be financed by a grant offered from The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

The solar PV system having 81 kW capacity will feature hundreds of solar panels sourced from eight manufacturers. The system will produce 90,000 kWh of electricity annually, which is roughly 75% of the annual electricity requirements of the building. A hybrid PV/solar hot water system will also be incorporated into the solar system.
