The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded the novel Hy-Vee supermarket located in Madison, WI, with the LEED Gold certification.
The LEED certification recognizes the construction, design and function of green buildings. The system recognizes sustainability approaches in areas such as indoor environmental quality, materials selection, energy efficiency, water savings and sustainable site development. Based on credits earned in each of the categories, one of the LEED Bronze, Silver, Platinum or Gold certifications are awarded.
Some of the green initiatives implemented on the Hy-Vee supermarket include the following. Locally sourced and recycled materials were utilized for the construction purpose. Water quality equipment were installed to remove pollutants from rainwater. Perennial plantings and native grasses utilized in landscaping remove the need for fertilizers, irrigation, herbicides or pesticides. High-energy air conditioning, heating and refrigeration equipment usage resulted in cost savings of around 30%. Water usage was decreased by 40% by the use of hand sinks and motion-activated, low-flow toilets. All adhesives, coverings, decor and carpeting elements utilized low-volatile organic compound (VOC) materials. Usage of ozone-depleting chemicals in refrigeration was completely avoided. A recycling facility was built for shower facilities, store-generated materials and changing rooms meant for employees.
Real estate and engineering senior vice president of Hy-Vee Dennis Ausenhus commented that the company invested $16 million on the supermarket located in Madison.
