Saltworks Flex EDR - Reduce EOR Costs Using Next-Generation Produced Water Treatment

Saltworks’ Flex EDR plant returns to our factory after a successful desalination test at an oil field in Alberta. CEO Ben Sparrow and Derek Mandel, our Director of Technology, provide a walking through tour of the pilot plant, the pre-treatment process, and we share a brief timelapse of the pilot setup process.

Electrodialysis Reversal (EDR) is an established, 50-year-old technology that we have adapted with our next-generation IonFlux membranes that are resistant to fouling and stand up to high concentrations of organics. This allows Flex EDR to desalinate produced water, that would cause conventional membranes to swell, providing low salinity water for water flooding reinjection that drastically reduces polymer costs.

Leveraging this patented technology offers oil companies practicing polymer flood EOR with the opportunity to save millions of dollars per year in chemical costs. Flex EDR also has applications in other industries – from mining and industrial desalination to agriculture and pharmaceuticals.
